Climate Change: the growing threat

Over the years, South Africa has been experiencing the impact of climate change with extreme temperatures and weather patterns ravaging the country. In the photo, we witness the destructive nature of climate change on the land. This is told from the account of the daily experiences of farmers all over South Africa, battling to keep their land alive during extreme weather patterns that cause shortage of water reserves. As these conditions worsen we witness the violent yet gradual effects on their harvest and livestock. All of this has been caused by natural factors. However, the start of industrial revolution shifted this, as human activities have now become the leading cause of the climatic shift. Activities such as the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas) to power technology, consequently releases toxic gases, all of which are extremely damaging to the environment and the earth's atmosphere (ozone layer). According to Nixon (2011) this a steady form of  unconventional form of violence disrupting and destabilising the ecological world gradually.

Eco-critic:  Bad News! These continued  activities by humans are truly making the cycle of life unsustainable, resulting in the disappearance of whole environments and life as we know it. Droughts induced by extreme weather are really the just the consequence and symptom of a bigger problem heading towards if we do not intervene.

Eco-action:  Good news! We can still take action as a society and stop the the complete effects of the devastation. It is not too late to make the change. This can only happen if we change and by that the change means embracing more sustainable water and energy consumption practices, and  advocating  for environmentally aware and conscious policies that takes the environment and life around us into consideration.
